The launch of Warm the Heart campaign

Shine working in partnership with St Stephens launched the Warm the Heart fundraising Campaign. We invited the community to join us to toast marsh mellows around a fire pit as a very fun way to highlight the ongoing need to get a heating system.

Please help us to raise £60,000 in the next 90 days. If we achieve this we will be able to access an additional £250,000 from NPower. The NPower Juice Fund will provide us with eco friendly heating and lighting.

This week saw the return of the Release Course, Tuesday 9.30 -11.

The programme helps people struggling with an addiction or difficult situations in their life. To support the course we are also giving one to one support.

The Release Course Returns

The week beginning 16th January 2017

Creative Threads moved to its new home St Stephens Community Hall as the club had out grown its home in church. The group nears completion on the mosaics and textiles for the Mustard Tree screen.

The week beginning 2nd January 2017

Shine spent the week working in partnership with Inn Churches and

St Stephens Church to provide hot meals, toiletries and somewhere to sleep to all the homeless people of Bradford. Teams of volunteers each day gave time to cook a hot evening meal, talk and offer support, and provide a hot breakfast, before cleaning up and setting up for the usual Shine daily activities. Thank you to everyone who supported the week and made it happen.

Last week a number of local children took part in woodworking activities at Shine. The group produced nesting boxes that looked like terraced houses, an air hockey table, a subbuteo football table with matching chairs and bird feeders.

On 31st October 2016 Shine held its 3rd annual Light Night Party. The party is a positive response to halloween, encouraging greater community and great fun. The party was welcome to all children from Bowling and by working with regular partners TLG Journey Makers we were able to bring together children from across the area. We were able to provide food to local families and a night of games, dancing, activities and prizes.

Summer is here!
Don't let bills and debts cause you grey clouds
EGYPT ROCKS: Holiday Club, Family BBQ and community litter pick

The summer holidays were very busy at Shine but thankfully we had a lot of friends join us from St Pauls Church, Letchworth. They helped us run a whole week of children's activities based on Egypt. We had an exciting week, on the Saturday there was a family BBQ for all those who had attended during the week and then on the Sunday we had a community litter pick, collecting over 80 bags of rubbish from the local area.

At last the sunshine is here and the children have broken up from school. If your children have grown since last holidays and they need summer outfits then visit us at the Children's Clothing Bank.  Don't let money struggles cause you extra stress, let us help. Thanks to our partner All Saints Church in Ilkley we have an extensive new range of clothes and baby gear.

From the week beginning 4th July
Wrap up warm even in summer!

It may be summer but its still a little damp outside. Do your kids need new coats? We know that summer can be an expensive time and children don't stop growing. Don't let money struggles cause you extra stress let us help. We have a large range of coats now in stock at our Children's Clothing Bank.

Take a break, enjoy the sunshine and stay young.
From the week 20th June 2016 - Building Babies Minds

So it may me a bit wet but its still great to get out into the gardens at Shine. We all know that nature helps to calm us down, it makes us more creative, it smells goods and sounds good. Did you know that it is also essential to healthy ageing? The Open University found that being in nature helps keep the brain healthy for longer. If thats not enough then explore our gardens they are looking amazing at the moment thanks to our volunteers

Our regular partner Better Start ran the first ever Infant Mental Health Awareness Week. It was a week of events to support parents in understanding the importance they play in helping their child's development. Free activities ran all week helping to build babies brains at this crucial time of growth. There were a great range of activities including stay and play fun, What's the Story Jackanory!, Rhyme Time and Splash and much much more.

29th May 2016 - A picnic for the Queen

To celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday we held a superb community picnic. People from the surrounding streets came together in the grounds of St Stephens Church for an afternoon of food and games. The glorious weather helped an afternoon of fun and laughter. There was a great deal of dancing both good and bad. The afternoon finished with a big game of rounders for all to join in.

27th May 2016 - Flock Exhibition Preview

Flock has been a 5 month project, we have worked with many different groups and individuals to create a number of different artworks in a range of techniques. Visitors to Shine had the opportunity to make fused glass birds, textile birds, print make birds and construct papier mache birds. A vast range and number of birds were produced representing the range of people that take part in Shine.

News from the week beginning 25th April 2016 - The Community Hall nears completion.

This is hugely exciting times for everyone at Shine as the Community Hall is very nearly finished. As you can see from the pictures below we not only have a bright new colour scheme but all new rooms. Thanks to our project partners Better Start Bradford we have been able to refurbish and extend the hall. In addition to a fully refurbished main hall there is a rebuilt snooker room and a completely new therapy space and meeting room. Having these new spaces and working with Better Start means we can deliver great family and community resources.

We are also super excited about the insulation and lighting. You may think this is a strange thing to be happy about but we have had the space designed so that it uses as little energy as possible. This means that even as fuel costs go up we can keep the costs down.

From the week beginning 4th April 2016

Last week an 8 week artist in residence programme started with Shaeron Caton Rose. Shaeron is working with groups on a Wednesday and Friday but everyone is welcome to pop in and chat with her and have a go at making a bird on a Friday. The flock of birds being made will hang from the ceiling of St Stephen's Church and represent all the different people that have visited Shine West Bowling. So join us and add to the flock.

We have been receiving record numbers at our aerobics and Zumba classes. We are incredibly happy that so many people are coming along and getting involved. At Shine we really do want to encourage everyone to live with a healthy mind and body. If you are interested have a look on our Activities For You page and see if any of our classes catch your eye.

News from the week beginning 8th February 2016

Volunteer celebration and awards ceremony. It is most appropriate that the first news story of 2016 is a celebration of the Shine Volunteers. All the volunteers have been through a full training programme and are a key part of Shine. Every volunteer plays an important in helping Shine to offer a wide range of activities and most importantly a warm welcome and someone to talk to. We simply could not achieve everything we do without them. If you would like to find out more about becoming a volunteer email
